Anatomy of the Blocks Editor

Now that you've opened your page in the Block Theme Editor, it's helpful to get familiar with the workspace before you start making changes. While the editor may look busy at first, most of your day-to-day edits happen in just one area—the page content itself.

This guide introduces the main parts of the editor, explains what each area is used for, and highlights a few tips that will make editing faster and easier. Once you know your way around, you'll be ready to confidently update text, images, buttons, and other content on your website.

Across the very top are your main controls: undo and redo, the List View button, and your Save button. This bar stays with you the whole time you're editing.

On the left, List View shows everything on your page as a simple list — headings, paragraphs, images, and the shared template areas. The row called Content is your editable area. Click any row to jump straight to that item, or drag rows to reorder them.

The large area in the middle is your content area — the body of the page, and the part you'll edit. Everything around it (the header, menu, banners, and footer) is the shared template, which is handled separately. How to actually make edits is covered in the next guide.

On the right is the settings sidebar. It has two tabs at the top:

• Page — settings for the whole page.

• Block — settings for whatever you've selected (a heading, a paragraph, an image, and so on).

Here's the tip most people miss: when you select something and want to change it, click the Block tab. The sidebar often starts on Page, so clicking Block is what reveals the controls for the item you just selected.

With something selected and the Block tab open, the sidebar is where you change how it looks. For example, select a heading and you can adjust:

• Color — the color of your text.

• Typography — the font face and text size.

• Dimensions — the spacing (padding and margin) around it.

• Border — an outline, if you'd like one.

Along the bottom you'll see breadcrumbs — a small trail (like Article › Content › Heading) that shows where the selected item sits within the page. Click a step in the trail to select that larger section.

When you select a block, a small toolbar floats just above it with quick actions for that block.

The icon at the far left selects the parent (or ancestor) — handy for grabbing the group or section that contains what you clicked.

The rest are block tools: text formatting, alignment, duplicate, and a More (⋮) menu with extra options.
