One of the biggest advantages of the Block Theme Editor is its flexibility. Instead of working with a fixed page layout, you build and edit your pages using blocks—individual pieces of content like paragraphs, headings, images, buttons, lists, and videos.
Adding a new block is quick and easy, and there are a few different ways to do it depending on how you're working. Whether you're simply adding another paragraph or inserting a new section into your page, this guide will show you the fastest way to find and place the block you need.
Option 1: The Quick Inserter
The fastest way to add a block while you're writing:
Click on a new, empty line in your content area (press Enter at the end of a paragraph to make one).
Type / followed by the block's name — for example /image, /heading, or /list.
Pick the block from the little list that pops up, and it's added right there.
The Block Library
Not sure what to type? Open the full block library instead. From the quick list, choose “See more blocks” to see every block, grouped into categories, with a search box at the top. This is handy when you're exploring what's available.
Option 2: The Toolbar + Button
When you need a new block in a precise spot, select an existing block first, then click the + (Insert) button in its toolbar. You'll get options for exactly where the new block goes:
Insert before — add a new block above the one you selected.
Insert after — add a new block below it.
Insert inside — for a container block (like a Group or Columns), add a block within it.
Which one should I use?
Both do the same thing — they're two doors to the same room — so use whichever is faster for the task at hand.
Editing everyday page content (a page built like an article — lots of paragraphs, headings, and images): the quick inserter is usually all you need. Start a new line, type /, and keep writing. This is the most common case, and you may rarely need anything else.
Doing layout or design work (like a home page with stacked sections, columns, and banners): you'll more often use the toolbar + button, because it lets you drop a block before, after, or inside a specific section — exactly where your design needs it.
Rule of thumb: writing content → reach for /. Arranging a layout → reach for the toolbar +.
